Another Zamboni Driver: David Meltzer at Rockefeller Plaza
For most Zamboni drivers the performance aspect is very important. They enjoy testing themselves and the machine. The Rink at Rockefeller Plaza, though pretty small, is still daunting to drive.
Halfway down the rink, lead driver David Meltzer puts his hands over his eyes. It scares the patrons at the restaurants with rinkside views. He also puts on a ski mask in the winter; his Eddie Bauer down "Freddie" mask, to protect him from the cold and to scare the little kids. "They love it."
The no-nos are really well-known in the industry: "I can do things you're not supposed to do on this machine." Zamboni drivers become really animated at this point in the conversation. They repeatedly return to stories of the Pop-Up-Wheelies, 360s, 720s, 1080s ... the stuff of lore and myth.
